DESERT ROSE

Desert Rose is shaped by the mountain—its altitude, its rituals, and its silence.
Set on the slopes of Mt Nyiro, a sacred landscape for the Samburu people, the retreat is conceived with deep respect for the land and the cultures of northern Kenya. Architecture and interiors are designed to sit quietly within the terrain, allowing the mountain to remain the primary presence.

The interior language is rooted in material honesty and local sourcing. Stone, timber, and earth finishes are drawn directly from the mountain, anchoring the spaces physically and visually within their environment. Much of the furniture is designed specifically for the project and crafted on site, ensuring scale, proportion, and function respond precisely to place.

Hand-loomed textiles are used extensively throughout the interiors, layered with restraint to introduce warmth and tactility. Lighting and soft furnishings are developed in collaboration with local communities, who contributed craft techniques, adornment, and textile work, resulting in highly customised pieces that carry both cultural relevance and individuality.

The concept draws from the tribes of northern Kenya, interpreted through a contemporary lens rather than literal reference. Pattern, texture, and material are used subtly, allowing cultural influence to be felt rather than overtly displayed, giving the retreat a character that is both rooted and singular.

Every design decision is guided by a commitment to preserving the pristine, untouched nature of the environment. Interventions are minimal and considered, ensuring the landscape remains dominant and undisturbed.

Beyond interiors, the project extends into the guest experience. Spatial planning and furnishings support a slower, more immersive way of inhabiting the retreat, while dedicated children’s areas and curated activities are designed to engage younger guests in a meaningful connection with the land, culture, and rhythms of mountain life.

The result is an environment of quiet immersion—where architecture, interiors, craft, and landscape exist in careful balance, offering a deeply personal and highly considered experience of place.
